(AP) ? President Barack Obama said Tuesday the choice facing voters this November will be as stark as in the milestone 1964 contest between Lyndon Johnson and Barry Goldwater ? one that ended up with one of the biggest Democratic landslides in history.

The president made his comments during a fundraising blitz in Florida, and right before his general election foe was essentially decided. Republican Rick Santorum dropped out of the presidential contest, making it clear that Obama would face off against Mitt Romney, the former Massachusetts governor.

Obama used a daylong trip to Florida to call again for Congress to raise taxes on millionaires, a populist pitch on an issue that he hopes will help define the differences with nominee-to-be Romney.

“This election will probably have the biggest contrast that we’ve seen maybe since the Johnson-Goldwater election, maybe before that,” Obama told donors at the first of three campaign events in this battleground state. The events were expected to raise at least $1.7 million.

In his 1964 race against Goldwater, Johnson carried 44 of 50 states and won 61 percent of the popular vote, the largest share of any candidate since 1820.

Running on a record that included the Great Society, Johnson portrayed Goldwater as a dangerous extremist. He was aided by Goldwater’s GOP convention speech, in which the candidate proclaimed, “Extremism in the defense of liberty is no vice.”

Republicans said Obama’s tax proposal was aimed at dividing Americans along class lines and gave him an excuse to raise more money for his re-election campaign.

“He can’t run on his record so he is coming down here to raise money using taxpayers’ funds to do so,” said Rep. Mario Diaz-Balart, R-Fla.

In a reception at a gated community in Palm Beach Gardens, Obama said Democrats would ensure the rich pay their fair share, while focusing on investments in education, science and research and caring for the most vulnerable.

By contrast, he said, Republicans would dismantle education and clean energy programs so they can give still more tax breaks to the rich.

Obama did not mention Romney by name, but the economic fairness message was the theme of his day ? and aimed squarely at the wealthy former Massachusetts governor.

Obama later outlined his support for the so-called Buffett rule at a speech at Florida Atlantic University in Boca Raton, Fla., arguing that wealthy investors should not pay taxes at a lower rate than middle-class wage earners.

The push for the Buffett rule, named after billionaire investor Warren Buffett, comes ahead of a Senate vote next week and as millions of Americans prepare to file their income tax returns. The plan has little chance of passing Congress, but Senate Democrats say the issue underscores the need for economic fairness.

Obama capped his day at a large rally-style event in Hollywood, Fla., that included a musical performance by singer John Legend and a fundraising dinner in nearby Golden Beach, Fla.

12 AprHome Projects ? A Guide To Secured Home Improvement Loans

Article by Paul Parker

Secured home improvement loans can be a good way to get the money that you need for improvements to your home that you may have always dreamed of but never been able to afford. Home improvements can be expensive, causing them to take a back seat to your other fiscal responsibilities.

Secured home improvement loans offer a way to improve your home without costing large amounts of money up front; instead, the money that you borrow with your secured home improvement loans can be repaid over time.

Types of Loans

There are two general types of loans: unsecured and secured. Unsecured loans are not secured against the assets of the borrower, and the lender has no rights to the assets of the borrower. The rates on this type of loan are higher, resulting in a much higher monthly payment.

Secured loans are generally more suitable for people who do not want pay a higher rate of interest or do not want to repay in higher installments. Instead of the higher rates or higher repayment option, the borrower has to give his assets or property as the collateral.

This means that borrower uses his home or some of his property or assets as a guarantee to the lending company. If the borrower fails to repay, then the lender can claim the secured property. This security enables the lender to offer lower rates of interest, though they are risking the loss of their assets if they default on the repayment.

Uses

Secured home improvement loans may be used on many types of house and real estate improvements and renovations. These improvements can be as simple as small repairs or as elaborate as the building of a new wing or the expansion of property.

Secured home improvement loans can also be used to improve and upgrade aspects of the home, like adding a new heating and air conditioning system. Ultimately, secured home improvement loans increase the value of the property they are used on.

Finding a Loan

Secured home improvement loans may be offered to a homeowner once they?ve built up sufficient equity in their property to cover the amount that they want to borrow. Since the loan is based upon the value of the home, an individual may still apply for secured home improvement loans long after the house and property has been paid for in full. Lenders who offer these loans are generally easy to find: most banks and lending companies offer these secured loans, as well as a number of lenders who operate exclusively on the internet.

Using the Loans

Once a secured home improvement loan has been granted, it is essential to make wise use of the funds. The money that you borrow should be sufficient to make the improvements, or else you?ll end up having to spend a lot more out of pocket than you may be able to afford. Conversely, borrowing more than is actually necessary can result in a greater difficulty in repaying the loan because you?ll have a larger loan amount.

The best way to determine the cost of your home improvement loan is through careful planning of the entire project before you even begin shopping for a the loan. Secured home improvement loans can be a great way to accomplish your goals, but should always be planned out carefully before being implemented.

11 AprPeter Donnelly, Director, Wellcome Trust Centre for Human Genetics, University of Oxford: Recombination hotspots and fine scale population structure and history in the UK

Peter Donnelly, Director, Wellcome Trust Centre for Human Genetics, University of Oxford
Tuesday, April 10, 2012, 4:00 PM to 5:00 PM
Location: Engineering 2, Room 599
Hosted By David Haussler

The first part of this talk will describe recent progress in our understanding of the mechanisms underlying human recombination. In addition to being one of the fundamental forces generating genetic diversity within populations, recombination is an essential part of meiosis, with errors in the process responsible for various serious human conditions.? Although it has been known for a long time, from pedigree studies, that recombination rates vary over megabase scales in the human genome, it became clear? about a decade ago that most recombination actually happens in small (1-2kb) regions called recombination hotspots.? The application of sophisticated statistical methods to large surveys of population genetic variation allowed the identification and characterisation of over 30,000 human hotspots.? A degenerate 13bp sequence motif has been associated with human hotspots – the first such motif identified in any species – followed recently by identification of the gene which binds the motif, and an understanding of the consequences of variation in the gene. The gene in question, PRDM9, turns out to be one of the most interesting genes in the human genome.

The second part of the talk will focus on the analysis of a particular UK sample collection, the “People of the British Isles”.? Individuals were sampled from rural areas of the UK, and included in analysis if they and their four grandparents were from the same area.? Informally, this can be thought of as a genetic sample from the UK population about 100 years ago, before some of the more recent large-scale population movements.? Haplotype-based analyses of population structure based on dense SNP-chip data reveal fine-scale genetic differentiation within the UK, and shed light on aspects of the history of the British Isles.

10 AprLas Vegas Electrical Contractor Talks About … – IdeaMarketers.com

Chris Dodson, of EcoElectric, a Las Vegas electrical contractor, talks about electrical upgrades and electrical codes in Las Vegas.

Tweet This LAS VEGAS, NEVADA – Eco Electric, owned by Chris Dodson, a Las Vegas electrical contractor, is currently installing electrical upgrades in many homes and businesses in the Las Vegas area. Mr. Dodson says that this is partly due to the fact that many homeowners are opting to remodel their existing homes, rather than purchase new ones. Also, this Las Vegas electrical contractor says that as buildings and homes do enter the real estate market, they often must be upgraded to pass code. For this reason, electricians in Las Vegas are often called upon to provide crucial services to property owners.

ELECTRICAL UPGRADES BY ELECTRICIANS IN LAS VEGAS

Mr. Dodson says that in homes that are over 30 years old, you’ll often find knob and tube wiring. While this form of wiring may be perfectly safe, most insurance companies will not insure a home with knob and tube wiring. The systems are so old that they have had time to be compromised by rodents, electrical overloads, and temperature extremes that can cause cracking in the porcelain insulators in the knobs and tubes. The wires and the cloth insulation around them are favorites with rodents. Electricians in Las Vegas often will need to climb into the attic to inspect such wiring. However, since you can’t get a homeowner’s loan on a house with no insurance, any real estate sale must require electrical upgrades.

Mr. Dodson says that Las Vegas electrical contractors also will perform electrical upgrades because in older homes, there are no grounded outlets. This is not a problem for many small appliances, such as toasters and curling irons, but he says that anything with 3 prongs on the plug needs to be grounded. Simply installing a 3 pronged outlet cover will not provide the proper protection. According to Mr. Dodson, electricians in Las Vegas see this kind of “fix” all the time, but while it may allow you to plug in a three pronged appliance, it will be more likely to overload your electrical wiring should a ground fault occur. LAS VEGAS ELECTRICAL CONTRACTORS INSPECT BREAKER BOXES

According to Mr. Dodson, electricians Las Vegas need to check to make sure the breaker box in your home is in good shape and able to carry the lodes necessary for your home to function well. Many times, homeowners over the years will build on to their homes, increasing the electrical lodes without concern for whether or not the breaker box can carry them. In addition, some breaker boxes are poorly located near plumbing fixtures and vents. This can allow moisture to infiltrate the breaker box causing corrosion. This can present a dangerous fire hazard and shock hazard to the home and the homeowner. Mr. Dodson recommends that if you have had any work done to your house, or if your home is over 30 years old, you should have it inspected by Las Vegas electrical contractors to make sure the electrical system is healthy and safe.

09 Apr‘Hunger Games’ sinks ‘Titanic 3D’ at box office

Murray Close / AP

“The Hunger Games” led the box office again.

Movie sensation “The Hunger Games” survived fresh competition from the “Titanic” and the gross-out “American Pie” gang to notch its third domestic box office win over the weekend.

“Hunger Games” took in $33.5 million at U.S. and Canadian theaters from Friday through Sunday and lifted its domestic sales through three weekends to $302.8 million, according to studio estimates released on Sunday.

The Easter weekend receipts for “Hunger Games” topped “American Reunion,” a sequel to one of film’s biggest comedy franchises, and a 3D remake of “Titanic” timed for the anniversary of the ship’s sinking. It was the third straight box office win for “Hunger Games.”

The Lions Gate Entertainment Corp movie about teens forced to fight to the death stormed into theaters on March 23 with a staggering domestic take of $152.5 million, the third-biggest weekend debut and the highest for a non-sequel.

Fan fever, plus a lack of big competitors at multiplexes, has kept “Hunger Games” hot, said Paul Dergarabedian, president of the box office division of Hollywood.com.

“Great word of mouth, coupled with a release date that has given it a pretty open playing field, has allowed the film to effectively dominate the marketplace,” he said.

The movie stars Jennifer Lawrence as Katniss Everdeen, the skilled archer and heroine of the post-apocalyptic story based on Suzanne Collins’ best-selling young adult novel.

In second place for the weekend, “American Reunion” met studio forecasts by ringing up $21.5 million in North America (the United States and Canada). International sales added $19.3 million, for a global total of $40.8 million.

Universal Pictures, a unit of Comcast Corp, and privately held Relativity Media co-financed “American Reunion” for about $50 million.

“Reunion” is the fourth movie in the “American Pie” franchise that kicked off 13 years ago with a pack of high-schoolers out to lose their virginity before graduation.

The original film, famous for a scene in which a pie is used to simulate sex, spawned two big-screen sequels and helped lead the way for future raunchy adult comedies. The first three “Pie” films grossed more than $750 million around the world.

In the new movie, the friends played by actors including Jason Biggs, Seann William Scott and Alyson Hannigan come together for a wild high-school reunion.

Exit polls showed 61 percent of “Reunion” filmgoers were older than 25, suggesting that it drew heavily from fans of the previous movies. Audiences gave the movie a “B+” grade in polling by survey firm CinemaScore.

“Titanic” sailed back into theaters on Wednesday with a 3D makeover and grossed an estimated $61.2 million around the world through Sunday. Of that total, $17.4 million came from domestic Friday-through-Sunday sales, placing the movie in third place on North American charts and meeting studio forecasts.

The original 1997 “Titanic,” starring Kate Winslet and Leonardo DiCaprio as young lovers on the doomed ship, was a movie phenomenon that led domestic box office charts for 15 weeks. It earned more than $1.8 billion at theaters, the second-highest total for any film.

Partners 20th Century Fox and Paramount spent $18 million on the 3D conversion, which was released to coincide with the 100th anniversary of the Titanic’s sinking on April 15, 1912.

Rounding out the top five, 3D action sequel “Wrath of the Titans” rung up $15.0 million domestically. The movie had bigger sales overseas, where it pulled in $43.0 million and helped lift the global total after two weekends to $211.4 million.

Snow White story “Mirror Mirror” took in $11.0 million, landing in fifth place. The family film has grossed $36.5 million domestically since opening last weekend.

Paramount Corp, a division of Viacom Inc, distributed “Titanic 3D” in the United States, and News Corp, a unit of 20th Century Fox, released the film in international markets.

“Wrath of the Titans” was released by Time Warner Inc’s Warner Bros. Privately held Relativity Media distributed “Mirror Mirror” in the United States, and Alliance Films released the movie in Canada.

Following are the top 10 movies at North American box offices for the three-day weekend starting Ap ril 6, led by “The Hunger Games” at No. 1,? according to studio estimates compiled by Reuters.
